Bonding recommendations for footwear professionals

Technical tips for using the products

These recommendations are given to the best of our knowledge and are derived from internal testing results and knowledge gained from working with our customers in the footwear sector.

The use of solvent-based products may damage some particularly delicate surfaces;
the user should perform preliminary tests to assess material compatibility.

COLLA TRE PINI SINTETICOL – TRE PINI SUPER RAPIDO – AQUILCOL SUPER RAPIDO

General remarks
Transparent polyurethane adhesives.
In all cases where greasy substances, release agents or plasticisers are present on the surfaces to be bonded, we recommend preventive cleaning treatment with our primer Aquilcol Cleaner 230. On very porous surfaces it may be necessary to apply a second coat of glue after the first has dried.
Wait 24 – 48 hours for the final adhesion.

Note
Tre Pini Super Rapido and Aquilcol Super Rapido also work without thermal reactivation (cold use). In this case, however, the times for coupling the surfaces range from 3 to 5 minutes after applying the adhesive.
This type of application is therefore suitable for bonding small surfaces.
After a longer period of time (more than 5 minutes), the adhesive loses its adhesion capacity and must necessarily be heat-reactivated to obtain optimal results.

Remove as much as possible any residue generated by the roughening work.

Intermediate step: no.

Bonding
Apply a regular layer of adhesive on both surfaces to be glued.
Wait for the solvent evaporation (at least 30 minutes). When completely dry, the adhesive takes on a whiteish color.
Proceed to heat activate the adhesive layers by a heat gun, oven or other equipment.
Activation temperature: 70 - 75 °C for Colla Tre Pini Sinteticol and 60 – 65 °C for Tre Pini Super Rapido and Aquilcol Super Rapido.
When heat activated, the adhesive layers tend to become slightly tacky.
Couple the surfaces to be joined immediately.
Press them.

Preventive treatment:
Sufaces to be bonded should be roughen.
Pay great attention when roughening oily or greasy leather to best remove the surface layer and any residues from previous bonding.
Remove as much as possible any residue generated by the roughening work.

Intermediate step:
Please apply our primer Tre Pini Ancorante PU/PVC or Aquilcol Primer PR10.
Do not let too much time pass between the carding work and the application of the primer to avoid the grease layer being reconstituted.
Wait for the evaporation of the solvents present in the primer (approximately 30 minutes).

TRE PINI 8010 ULTRA CHIARO – AQUILCOL RS 80 ULTRA CHIARO – AQUILCOL RS 100 TRASPARENTE

General remarks
Newly developed very light-coloured polychloroprene based adhesives.
High performances on many different surfaces.
In all cases where greasy substances, release agents or plasticisers are present on the surfaces to be bonded, we recommend preventive cleaning treatment with our primer Aquilcol Cleaner 230.
On very porous surfaces it may be necessary to apply a second coat of glue after the first has dried.
Wait 48 – 72 hours for the final adhesion.

Note
These adhesives have proven to be excellent in practice for repairing climbing shoes by following this procedure:
Clean the surfaces properly and card them. Add a 5% percentage of Tre Pini Activator FE to the adhesive.
Mix the prepared solution very well. Apply a layer of adhesive + activator on the surfaces.
Wait until the layers of adhesive are completely dry.
The adhesive is completely dry when it has lost its stickiness. This can take a long time.
Once the adhesive is completely dry, proceed with thermal activation using a heat gun, oven or other equipment.
Join the surfaces and press them together.
In general, adhesives that are not polyurethane-based do not require thermal activation for bonding.
However, many professionals and repairers have expressed satisfaction with the procedure described above.
